It’s a Toast: Why We Love the “Friends” Kitchen

May 1, 2019

Welcome to our new series, “Roast and Toast!”

Each month we’re going to feature one kitchen we love and one kitchen we hate. It can be from anywhere – a sitcom, a cooking show, a cartoon, a movie, or any other screen you’d see one on!

We’re starting off with a toast to a kitchen from one of the most popular shows in the U.S. and U.K. – the iconic Friends.

Monica was a caterer in the show, and her kitchen was the gathering point for her friends. Whether it was a girls-only chat or the whole group eating dinner, you couldn’t miss the Friends kitchen and its cute kitchen equipment.

Here’s why we love it!

Killer Mismatched Décor

If you’ve ever heard of shabby chic, you can thank the Friends kitchen for a lot of its popularity. Through 10 seasons we saw the mismatched chairs, blue cabinets, and open shelves brimming with kitchen equipment and dishes.

The open shelving was perfect for television, allowing Monica to pull out pots and pans or whatever else she needed on a whim. But they became a real trend in décor as well, in no small part because of how popular the show was.

The odd drapes, almost cluttered feel, and even the small decorative plates gave Monica’s kitchen a friendly vibe and made it a great place to create memories.

The Versatility of Small Spaces

If you have a small apartment, does that mean you have to do go without the equipment you’d love to have?

Not at all!

One of the things we love about Monica’s kitchen is that it shows you can do a lot with a small space. Yes, there’s a small round table, but that doesn’t keep people from gathering. Sure, there’s not a lot of storage, but she makes the most of what she has.

Just because you don’t have a lot of wall space doesn’t mean that you can’t decorate. You can take advantage of the color of your chairs, your drapes, your cabinets, even your fridge to create a fun, welcoming atmosphere.

A Useful Layout

Monica’s kitchen may not be huge, but the layout works well. The table is in the main open space, and the fridge, stove, and sink are in a logical layout. It’s easy to see how someone (even without Monica’s cooking skills or kitchen equipment) would be able to thrive here.

The set uses a one-wall kitchen layout to save space in what’s portrayed as a small city apartment. This is also known as a Pullman kitchen. Some include an island, but in the Friends kitchen, the table takes that place and creates an easy place for a conversation or a cup of coffee.
